Soulmate Astrology – 5 Factors That Determine Compatibility

Soulmate astrology is a fun way to determine our compatibility with others. Seriously, it’s like having a crystal ball into our relationships!

I mean… we all wanna know how we click with others, right?

  • Is this new guy my soulmate?
  • I’m a Pisces. I *was* dating an Aries, but he was soooo not ready to commit. Is that an Aries thing?
  • Why didn’t Ben and Jen work? They were so cute together!

To be honest, soulmate astrology can be tricky business because there are 5 main variables that go into it. BUT, it’s so accurate and interesting, that it’s completely worth learning!

Today, we’ll cover all of these parts. By the end of this post, you’ll be a Soulmate Astrology 101 whiz! 🙂

Soulmate Astrology Myths

Before we dive into the deep waters of soulmate astrology works, let’s clear up a couple of soulmate myths. Many of us have the wrong idea about our soulmates, thanks to the movies. (Cinderella didn’t do a gal any favors!)

TRUTH: Soulmates are karmic connections, meaning, they are deep spiritual connections that we carry from lifetime to lifetime.

Myth 1: Soulmate relationships are perfect.

In the movies, the guy gets the girl and it’s all diamonds and chocolates. The truth is that even the deep connection between soulmates will have bumps in the road. How rough the road is depends on the karma you each brought with you in this lifetime.

Myth 2: It’s all about romance.

Another misunderstanding about soulmates is that they are always romantic relationships. They definitely can be, but soulmates can also be our kids, family members, friends, and pets!

How Does Soulmate Astrology Work?

Now that we have a better understanding of the real soulmate definition, let’s talk about how soulmate astrology works.

It all starts with your natal chart (birth chart). Astrologists analyze or “read” the charts to determine compatibility. This is called synastry.

It’s based on the theory that the planets in your natal chart are connected to another person’s natal chart planets. (This could be your parents’, kids’, siblings, or soulmate’s chart.)

When an astrologist is looking for soulmate connections in a natal chart, there are several specific places they look (which we are going to cover in a second).

Remember, since there are two people concerned, there are always two planets involved.

That means that to be exact in an astrology reading, both planets need to be known, along with other facts. Below is an overview of how soulmate astrology affects your relationship 🙂

Soulmate Planet Connections

SUN

When the sun in the other person’s natal chart is in a planet in your chart, they will take the lead in the relationship.

Just as the planets move around the Sun, you will find yourself supporting your partner. This isn’t necessarily a negative thing—you may have agreed that supporting this person would be a part of your role in this lifetime.

When the Sun is involved, the relationship can be miraculous and intense, like the Sun!

MOON

The Moon is known for two things:

Emotionsis it a full moon?

EnrichmentOoh, full moon tomorrow! Time to recharge my crystals 🙂

When your partner’s natal chart moon is in a planet in your chart, they will play a nurturing role in your life.

The Moon brings with it a sensitive and stable influence into the relationship which provides you with comfort and security.

Because there is a feminine aspect to the moon, you’ll see this a lot with mother/child and sister relationships.

JUPITER

Jupiter is a power planet and signifies all sorts of goodness like prosperity and achievement. When you and a partner’s chart connect via Jupiter, it will bring a delight to the relationship! You can also expect that one partner will expand the mind of the other – and show them new ways of thinking!

VENUS

When Venus is in your partner’s chart and is connected with any planet in yours, romance, magnetism and love will bloom with vibrancy.

Tip: Keep in mind though that it doesn’t mean that it is a “forever love”. The long term of the relationship depends on what other planets are in your natal chart, too.

MERCURY

When Mercury is in both your charts, it means the relationship will have lots of new ideas and awesome communication.

And here’s something really cool: The topics and details of what you talk about will depend upon the other associated planets. For example, expect vibrant and dramatic discussions when Mercury is featured with Venus, Jupiter or the Sun!

MARS

Mars has a pretty intense rep. It’s symbolized by war, passion and aggression. This can make for an unpredictable combo! The relationship will be intensified depending on what planet it aspects. As an example, a Mars/Jupiter combination will be passionate, but fiery!

SATURN

When Saturn connects with a planet in your chart, it feels as though kismet has brought you together. There’s a super strong connection between the two people, though with such a serious start, the relationship can sometimes become a little overwhelming to one or both partners.

URANUS

Uranus has similar traits as Mercury, but super-charged! When Uranus connects with a planet in your natal chart, it can burn HOT and fast… then fizzle just as quick! Many of the love at first sight stories you hear are thanks to this planet.

NEPTUNE

When you are connected via Neptune in your natal charts – o.m.g. magic! It’s like a super-charged version of Venus! These relationships are typically based on spiritual or creative connection and can lead to unconditional love.

PLUTO

The qualities of this planet are an intense version of Mars. We’re talking super passion and drama! As Mars does, Pluto in a natal chart amplifies the traits of the other planet involved. These relationships are often passionate love affairs.

Lunar Nodes

One of the most important parts of soulmate astrology are Lunar nodes. This is even more important than planet connections!

Lunar nodes are the astrological points where the Moon crosses the ecliptic path of the sun. Don’t worry too much about that, just know this:

The South Node represents past karma. The North Node represents current or future karma.

and…

Because we are working out our karma together, lunar node connections are common in the natal charts of family members and soulmates.

Zodiac Traits and Soulmate Astrology

Each of the twelve Zodiac signs are connected to one of the four elements—water, fire, earth and air.

As a general “rule of thumb”, the best compatibility between two people is when they come from the same element.

Of course, each Zodiac sign (Cancer, Libra, etc.) brings its own traits to the table, even though some of them are ruled by the same element (water, etc.)

WATER ELEMENT

People ruled by the Water are spiritual, emotionally sensitive, sentimental, and perceptive. They are romantic and loyal, giving their all to relationships.

  • The water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
  • Most compatible with other Water signs and Air signs
  • Least compatible with Fire signs, while Earth signs can go either way

FIRE ELEMENT

Individuals ruled by Fire are daring, motivated and lively. Makes sense, right? They want fun and excitement in their romantic relationships… just like they want it to be a part of everything else in their lives!

  • The fire signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
  • Most compatible with other Fire signs and Air signs
  • Least compatible with water signs, while Earth signs can go either way

EARTH ELEMENT

People with Earth signs tend to be practical, devoted, responsible and careful. They are “earthy” and “grounded”. Earth signs are practical in all of their relationships. They want a faithful and stable partner.

  • The earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
  • Most compatible with other Earth signs and Water signs
  • Least compatible with Fire, with Air signs being a tossup

AIR ELEMENT

Those ruled by Air are chatty, outgoing and laid back. They require a great deal of freedom in their relationships and in life.

  • The Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius
  • Most compatible with other Air signs, as well as Water and Fire signs
  • Least compatible with Earth signs

Do opposites really attract?

YES! 🙂 Since we tend to desire that which we don’t have within ourselves, the opposites attract theory definitely has some truth to it!

For example, it’s common to see people with high amounts of fire and earth influences in their charts be highly attracted to someone with a great deal of air and water in their charts.

Zodiac Sign Polarity and Soulmate Astrology

But wait, there’s more! (I know, it’s a lot. But it’s more fun than algebra, right?)

Each zodiac sign is also placed in a polarity category—either positive or negative.

Positive signs tend to get along best with other positive signs, but…

Since our soulmates aren’t necessarily the easiest relationships we have (we’re supposed to learn from one another, right?), you’ll see a positive sign have a soulmate with a negative polarity and vice versa.

POSITIVE POLARITY TRAITS

People with signs that have positive polarity are extroverted, self-confident and more optimistic.

They include: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.

NEGATIVE POLARITY TRAITS

People with signs that have negative polarity are introverted, practical and more pessimistic.

These include: Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.

Modalities and Soulmate Astrology

Are you getting a feel for how intricate soulmate astrology is? It’s fun though, right? 🙂

Along with all of the other good stuff we just talked about, astrologists also consider the modality (or mode) of each of the signs for soulmate astrology.

The modalities represent how each Zodiac sign puts itself out into the world.

We get along best with those who have a corresponding modality, but our soul mates can totally be any of the modalities:

CARDINAL SIGNS – DYNAMIC LEADERS

  • Aries
  • Cancer
  • Libra
  • Capricorn

FIXED SIGNS – PERSISTENT, PHILOSOPHICAL, HIGH ACHIEVERS

  • Taurus
  • Leo
  • Scorpio
  • Aquarius

MUTABLE SIGNS – FLEXIBLE AND BALANCED

  • Gemini
  • Virgo
  • Sagittarius
  • Pisces

Soulmate Astrology Takeaways

  • The most thorough way to determine soulmate compatibility is to review the 5 sections of your natal chart: modality, polarity, elements, lunar nodes and planets.
  • Soulmate astrology can help us understand ALL of our relationships – including those with our parents, kids, siblings and romantic partners.
  • We can look at the Zodiac signs to get a quick idea of which signs are the most compatible.
  • There are always at least two planets involved in soul mate astrology. Depending on which planets are where can give you a more accurate astrological forecast.
  • Lunar nodes are super important and call tell you if you are working out past karma.
  • Each astrological sign is ruled by an element – fire, earth, air or water. It is said that signs with the same element jive together the best.
